Footprint Awards 2011 - Attendance Details

For the first time, the foodservice sector is recognising achievements in sustainability and environmental excellence across the supply chain at the Footprint Awards. Award winners will be announced from the shortlist of nominees at an extraordinary evening on 19th May at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and we hope you will be able to join us.

It’s a special evening because it’s the only one of its kind.

From the beautiful venue, to the fascinating menu designed by CH&Co Executive Chef David Cavalier, the menu ingredients, the staff uniforms, the table linen, crockery, fine wine and cocktails - all will tell a story of sustainability. The evening is about showing that being sensitive to your environment can also titillate the taste buds!

And to spice things up, this year’s theme is “upcycling”, which will feature some surprising creations from Fashion students that will open our eyes to how we can think differently about what we create and how we can reuse it.

The Footprint Awards are more than just industry recognition; there is a legacy too.

The Footprint Awards have started a student internship scheme – supported by sponsors – to create new research and to attract new talent into sustainability in the foodservice industry. That’s worth supporting when students are struggling to find work experience.

So come and join the Headline Sponsor, Nestlé Professional, and leaders in sustainability from the across the foodservice supply chain for an extraordinary celebration on 19th May.
The party begins with a drinks reception at 6.45pm at RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London, W1B 1AD, UK

Dress: Evening dress/Black Tie (or Lady Gaga-style meat dress if you must!)

Carriages: 11.30pm

Royal Wedding Dress Rumours Rubbished!

Will it be white, with hand-sewn roses, pure taffeta, cinched-in corsetry and what about that all-important train? The excitement around Kate Middleton’s wedding dress is reaching fever pitch, so much so that Julia Roebuck, a recent graduate from the London College of Fashion, has used her creative flare to create a unique one-of-a-kind dress for the “Footprint Awards 2011”!

Commissioned for the first-ever Footprint Awards and made using BioWare paper cups from leading packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki, Julia’s masterpiece is the perfect eye-catching creation for the newest member of the Royal family and is a fun take on a issue which still remains very topical, recycling. She makes the following comment:

“Kate’s a fashion icon; from the daring see-through slip that won her Prince William’s heart (which recently sold at auction for almost £80,000), she’s developed a classic, much-coveted style which sees her spark a fashion stampede in whatever she’s pictured wearing. She might have found ‘the dress’, but having recently been criticised by fashion legend Dame Vivienne Westwood for not being very adventurous, I decided to create a unique design with the royal wedding in mind – based on the fact that Kate’s not afraid to wear something more than once, so she’s the ideal inspiration behind my passion for up-cycling fashion!”

Julia’s dress has been designed to support the Footprint Awards, the UK’s first-ever Awards programme exclusively dedicated to rewarding contributions to sustainability and environmental excellence in hospitality. And it’s well known that Kate favours British designers; so along with the likes of Temperley, Mulberry and Burberry, perhaps Julia Roebuck could be the next name in fashion! The organisers certainly think so, and will be delighted for Kate to wear Julia’s one-of-a-kind creation should there be a wardrobe malfunction on the ‘big day’ – so long as it’s back for the Awards evening on 19th May!

See Julia’s Royal Wedding dress, together with a selection of other garments she’s created exclusively for the Awards, at the Footprint Awards dinner on 19th May 2011, RIBA, London.

Footprint Awards Judges Are Getting Down To Business

The Footprint Awards closed to new entries this week and with over 100 entries to the categories from across the foodservice sector all eyes are now turning to the shortlist and the Awards dinner at the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). Those attending can look forward to an extraordinary evening which aims to celebrate the best in sustainability – both on-stage and on the dinner tables.

The RIBA is a beautiful venue with its own stringent sustainability guidelines and the menu, designed by CH&Co’s Executive Chef David Cavalier, will use sustainably produced ingredients. Even the crockery, the staff uniforms, the table linen, the fine wine and cocktails - all will tell a story of sustainability. The evening is about showing that being sensitive to your environment can also titillate the taste buds!

And to draw attention to the good things that are happening in Foodservice, the evening will feature some surprising creations from Fashion students that will open our eyes to how we can think differently about what we consume and how we can reuse it.

Talking of students, The Footprint Awards are more than just industry recognition; they’re all about encouraging new talent into the industry. At a time when graduate job and work placements are at a premium, the Awards have started a student internship scheme – supported by sponsors – to create new research and to provide students in sustainability some experience in the world of work. The 19th May will see a gathering of leaders in sustainability from the across the foodservice supply chain for an extraordinary celebration.

Footprint Awards Deadline for Entries Extended

Monday 19th January was officially “Blue Monday” and with VAT changes to deal with, new government policy coming out of Westminster like fireworks on bonfire night, environmental disasters around the world and media coverage about food security it’s not surprising that we have a lot to think about right now. So Footprint have decided to extend the deadline for entry to the Footprint Awards until March 14th 2011 so that we can all recover from the New Year onslaught and concentrate on reducing the environmental impact of the foodservice business and creating a more sustainable industry. Enter the Footprint Awards now and get recognised for your efforts towards environmental excellence and sustainability. It may be what makes the difference to your customers and consumers.

More than one million people in the UK will be offered MSC certified sustainable fish in workplace restaurants, schools, hospitals and defence sites, thanks to leading foodservice provider Sodexo.

In a world-first, Sodexo has had all of its restaurants and cafés certified to serve Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified sustainable fish. MSC fish will be available in around a thousand sites ranging from Manchester Royal Infirmary, the Co-operative and Eton College to primary schools in Wiltshire, Colchester Garrison, Blenheim Palace and Chelsea Flower Show.

Hannah Arcaro, UK Foodservice Manager at the MSC, said: “What Sodexo has achieved is nothing less than amazing. Serving MSC certified sustainable fish at nearly a thousand sites will introduce a huge cross-section of British consumers to the issues around overfishing and how they can be part of the solution. By helping to reward the certified fisheries around the world, who have proven that they are fishing sustainably, Sodexo and its customers will be helping to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis.”

Michelle Hanson, Commercial Director, Sodexo UK & Ireland, said: "This is a landmark achievement for us. MSC certification of our restaurants and cafés was an ambitious target that we set ourselves as part of the Better Tomorrow Plan, our sustainability strategy to 2020.

"Like most people, we were alarmed to hear about declining fish stocks. Through MSC certification, we believe we are making a real difference in helping to protect the world's fish stocks.

"Traceability of our fish from boat to plate has always been very important to us. With the MSC Chain of Custody certification, we have complete assurance that every step of the supply chain has been certified to ensure that we know that every piece of MSC fish that we serve comes from a well managed fishery.

"We are passionate about sustainable sourcing at Sodexo and have really engaged with our staff and customers at each of our sites with training initiatives and promotional material to get everyone working together to support sustainable fishing."
